Get Your Kids to Develop a Reading Habit

By Robert Shorn

Reading is so fundamental to the success of anyone, that every child should learn the habit as much as they learn the habit of brushing their teeth. This opens their mind to all kinds of possibilities that cannot be found anywhere else.

Chances are that when they reach school age, reading will become a daily part of their lives, and one of the best things you can do is patiently work with them as they learn how to do it successfully. They need your support but they also need to learn.

Early on, kids have a difficult time learning how letters sounds when they make up words, and they need you to reassure and encourage them as they stumble through the early stages of the process.

Get some good children's books which interest your child. These are made with cool pictures and large font print, which makes it easier for the child to learn. The more comfortable they are, the more responsive they will be.

Also, keep in step with how they are learning, and don't give them more than they are capable of being interested in. This is another part of patience that is important if they are going to be developing a love for reading.

Keep in mind that they can only absorb so much at one time, so don't overwhelm them to the point where they end up hating to read. Give them time to ease into it and develop their pace.

Also, try to limit their new vocabulary to a few words a day and that way they will retain more of them over time.

Don't make your children nervous by stopping and correcting them every time that they make a mistake. Go with it, and let them know that it is perfectly okay to mess up because that is how we all learn. Whatever you do, never tease or belittle them at all because you can seriously mess up their self esteem that they can carry with them for years.

Your child can very easily develop a good reading lifestyle if you give them the right tools they need to learn. These are patients and fostering a positive and drama free environment for them to grow in. They will benefit more from your gentle guidance, and the results will be obvious when things start to make sense to them.

Did you know that.....

By 8 months, a baby's brain has about 1000 trillion cells connections. By the age 10, that number is reduced to 500 trillion. As the brain operates on a 'use it or loose it basis', early experiences are the defining factor affecting the rate of reduction in nerve connections. Studies on neglected children, who had been deprived of phyical and mental stimulation,
p1c
found that parts of their brain were underdeveloped and 20-30% smaller than most children their age.
